Open Air Burning Permits Required In Brant County

The County of Brant Fire Department would like to remind residents, farmers and business owners that Open Air Burning Permits are required for many burning activities.

BRANT COUNTY - With spring moving quickly towards summer many people are looking forward to having their friends over for big bonfire; farmers might be looking to clear up brush from their yards.

The County of Brant Fire Department would like to remind residents, farmers and business owners that Open Air Burning Permits are required for many burning activities.

Acting Fire Chief Geoff Hayman expresses the importance of having a permit to burn.

"Whether in the backyard of your home, the cottage or at a campground, make fire safety a priority. Open air burning, especially if it is left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire. Open air burning may require a permit from the County of Brant Fire Department."

Open Air Burning Permits are required when burning large amounts of brush or for large farm-type fires. A single occasion permit for Open Air Burning costs $125 which includes up to three days of burning. 

Hayman outlines some activities that do not require an Open Air Burning Permit.

"Cooking fires are allowed if it consists of a small contained fire, supervised at all times and used to cook food on, such as a grill or barbeque. Recreational fires are also allowed if it is contained in a fire pit, not larger than one meter, supervised at all times and is at least 15 meters away from a building, structure, hedge, fence, roadway, and property line. For both cooking and recreational fires where the conditions of the bylaw are complied with, there is no need to call the Fire Department in advance to obtain a permit."
