Massive Airbag Recall

Several automakers, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda, are recalling millions of vehicles globally over faulty passenger-side airbags. The automakers say the airbag inflators may burst, sending plastic pieces flying, but no injuries have been reported so far. Honda is recalling 1.1 million vehicles, including more than 107,000 in Canada, and Toyota is recalling 1.7 million vehicles, including some 580,000 in North America. The airbag manufacturer, Takata Corporation of Japan, says the recall affects other automakers as well, including non-Japanese manufacturers, and may reach as many as three million cars. Honda Canada says airbag inflators in affected vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which may cause the inflator to rupture and cause possible injuries. In Canada, the Honda recall covers almost 81,000 Civics and about 11,000 Acura 1.7 EL vehicles from the 2001-2003 model years, more than 6,000 CR-V vehicles from 2002-2003 and almost 10,000 Odysseys from the 2002 model year. Nissan is recalling 480,000 vehicles in all, and Mazda is recalling 45,000 vehicles, including the RX-8 and Mazda 6.
