Bike Safety Tips For Cyclists

Now that the summer weather is upon us, cyclists are all ages are advised to be safe when they hit the roads.

Summer vacation is just around the corner for lots of students in Oxford County, which means there may be more kids out riding their bikes.

Bike safety is always a number one priority and research shows that wearing a helmet properly can reduce your risk of head injury by 85%.

Public Health Nurse Kelly Vanderhoeven tells us the proper way to wear a helmet.

"Your helmet is put on your head correctly when you can fit two fingers above your eyebrows. The two straps go on either side of your ears, flat against your head in the shape of a V and you can fit one finger below your chin strap so that it's fitting snug, but you can still turn your head to look for traffic and things you need to be watching out for."

Head injury is the number one cause of serious injury or death for kids on bikes. It is also illegal for cyclists under the age of 18 to ride a bike without a helmet.

Here is a list of some more bike safety tips:

- If you're riding at dusk or night make sure you are wearing reflective strips or clothing that is reflective so you are easy to spot.

- It is mandatory to have a white light on the front of your bike and a red reflector on the back of your bike.

- Make sure to share the road with other vehicles and pedestrians.

- When on the road make sure you are riding in the same direction as traffic.

The Oxford Injury Prevention Team also holds multiple bike rodeos at schools throughout the county. Team members will tune up the kids bikes to make sure they are in good working order. They also make sure kid’s helmets are properly fitted and if the helmet is cracked or unsafe that helmet will be replaced. In addition the kids will be taken through obstacle courses to ensure that they know the proper hand signals and rules of the road.
