Oxford County reflects back on August 7th, 1979 when two F4 tornadoes caused massive destruction.

OXFORD COUNTY -- Many residents of Oxford County will remember where they were 35 years ago today (August 7th).

It was roughly 6:30 pm on a hot, muggy summer evening when two large tornadoes ripped through the region.

At least three tornadoes touched down that day in southwestern Ontario, causing approximately 100-million dollars in damages.

The first of two F4 tornadoes in Oxford County touched down north of Woodstock, between Hickson and Tavistock, travelling roughly 30 kilometres before it dissipated just east of Bright, destroying homes, farms and outbuildings.

The second developed near Embro and grew in size by the time it struck the Friendly City, widening roughly to half a kilometre as it hit Woodstock.  By the time it hit Oxford Centre, it had grown to its maximum size and within two minutes, flattened thirty homes, the local church and community centre.  The small hamlet was nearly razed by the intense winds and storm.

The tornado continued on, killing two people in New Durham and leaving over 140 people injured in the aftermath.

On Thursday, the Township of East-Zorra Tavistock are sharing memories, pictures and stories of the 1979 tornado and how the municipality pulled together during one of their most tragic events.

"Memories: 1979 Tornado" is being held at EZT Council Chambers (90 Loveys Street Hickson) from 4:30 to 7:00 pm.  Oxford Archives will have a display, pictures and documents; the Township has also produced a video which will be unveiled during the event.
