Officials say it'll help create 71,000 childcare spaces by 2026
The province has created a new grant program to help childcare operators increase spaces for more kids.
As part of the $10-a-day deal the province reached with the federal government in March, the province vowed to create 71,000 new child-care spaces by 2026.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the province is making progress on that goal, and has released details of a plan to create 53,000 spots.
Lecce notes the province is giving one-time grants to childcare operators to help cover costs associated with expanding, which include renovations and buying equipment.
Officials say the grants will be prioritized in areas that have historically low rates of availability.
Lecce, along with federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Families, Children and Social Development Minister Karina Gould made the announcement today.
They also spoke about fee reductions for families of kids enrolled in child-care centres that have opted in to the national program.
Families can expect rebates of 25 percent off their fees dating back to April, with a further fee reduction of up to 50 percent expected by the end of the year.
