Young people have a chance to learn life saving skills, and see if a career as a paramedic could be right for them at an open house.
WOODSTOCK - Kids and young adults in Oxford County can learn first hand what it is like to be a paramedic.
Scouts Canada and the Oxford EMS are hosting an Open House on Saturday to encourage people to sign up for their MedVents program. MedVents is looking for motivated youth between the ages of 14 and 26 to join the vocational program. Area Commissioner for Scouting in Oxford County Mike Billham tells Heart FM one of things offered in the program is your basic first aid training.
"You learn a lot more working with the paramedics about emergency preparedness and how to deal with emergencies and we will grow into more extensive first aid. Myself I have my wilderness training and we will be looking into growing towards first responders."
Billham says the course is run by paramedic Ryan Orton.
"He would have an extensive knowledge, not just with paramedics but what it is to work in the medical field with doctors, emergency and the different facets of the medical industry."
The Open House runs from 2-4 at the EMS building on Mill Street this Saturday. You can also come to the Open House if you are interested in signing up for any of the Scouts programs.
