Carmeuse Lime files application to pump water from the west quarry in Beachville
An application is before the Ministry of Environment to allow Carmeuse Lime Canada to pump water out of the west quarry pond at their Beachville site.
According to their application temporary pumping of this pond is required to satisfy Ministry of Natural Resources licence requirements for rehabilitation of the West Quarry pond walls since quarrying of rock within this portion of the site is complete.
They also say the rehabilitation of the quarry walls involves keying large stone blocks within a trench in the base of the quarry, and thus allow placement and compaction of soil material in a safe manner to stabilize the side slopes. The work would increase the safety of the area by reducing the slope of the current near vertical quarry walls
Ingersoll resident and Environmental activist Mike Farlow says despite what Carmeuse claims, he believes lowering the water level will impact the water table.
"Ingersoll is always put on water restriction. That lake is a tremendous reservoir of fresh water for the town as it grows, so to dewater it at a time when we seem to be needing it just doesn't make sense."
Farlow is encouraging locals to check out the application and make their voices heard.
"I think the public has a 30 day period up until April 11 to respond and raise concerns that one, we're losing this resource as a recreation area and two, that wells are going to be impacted and this is going to impact the water quality and quantity in the area."
"If that lake is gone, you don't need to do an Environmental Assessment on it and that increases the chances of just putting a landfill right beside it."
Local have until April 11 to comment on the application.
We have put a request out to Carmeuse Lime Canada for comment though no response was received at this point.
