Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday

The WFD is reminding everyone to check their smoke and co alarms while they're changing the clocks in their home.

WOODSTOCK - Another time change is upon us in Ontario.

Daylight Saving Time will officially begin at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, so the clocks will spring ahead one hour.

Lisa Woods, the Public Information Coordinator for the Woodstock for Department (WFD), is issuing her bi-annual reminder to change your clocks, and check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.

"We want to make sure you're changing the batteries twice a year in both your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Also take the time to do a light vaccuming to keep the dust and particles out so they work to the best of their ability."

You should also check the expiration or manufacturers date to make sure they're not expired. Smoke and CO alarms both have to be replaced after 10 years. Woods says hardwired smoke alarms have to be maintained by hardwired alarms and will always have a battery backup. When it comes to CO alarms, they could be battery operated, plug in, or combination alarms but they have to be in an area that can detect carbon monoxide in the home. This means you can't have them being a curtain, a couch, etc.

Woods would also like to remind everyone about the new law regarding CO alarms.

"As of 2026, you must have a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home. On the bedroom levels, they should be close to the bedroom area so we know you'll hear it in the middle of the night if something goes wrong."

Smoke alarms also have to be located on every level of the home and close to the sleeping areas.

Woods adds violators could face a $360 fine for each alarm that's missing, out of date, or not working.
