WOODSTOCK -- The Woodstock Fire department have added two new staff members for the day.
The elementary students are acting as the Junior Fire Chief and Junior Deputy Chief.
Six year-old Jamina Tieu, a student at Southside Public School, had lunch of her choice prepared by the firefighters. "I'm going to eat some spaghetti and meatballs and it doesn't matter if it has sauce or doesn't...it doesn't matter."
Jamina stopped by the Heart FM studios with the firefighters as they were heading back to the Fire Hall. When asked if she wanted to be a firefighter when she grows up, Jamina responded..."No, I'm going to be a Superhero - Doctor mix."
Trevor Ford of the Woodstock Fire Department said the Fire Chief contest is an annual event for them. "All of the schools are allowed to participate and there's a colouring contest, I believe it's up to grade three and they have a fire safety message on it. And than for the older grades, they have to do a picture, and draw it and colour it and there will be a fire message on it."
Ford says the Junior Chief and Junior Deputy Chief spend the day doing a number of activities. "We'll let them go through some of our trucks, maybe we'll set up the big aerial platform truck and we'll put them up 100 feet in the air. We're going to have a little fire out back and we're going to let them put it out with the hoses and we're going to rip a car apart and we're going to smash it and we'll let them try and open it up."
Jamina said the fire truck picked her up at her house this morning, took her over to school to show her classmates and other students and at the end of the day will return back to school in the truck.
