Woodstock Police hope to continue their Summer Student Program next year after a successful first year.
WOODSTOCK - Shelby Pierce knows for sure policing is in her future.
The 16 year old Woodstock resident spent the past eight weeks employed with the Woodstock Police Service through the Youth in Policing Initiative.
The Youth in Policing Initiative provides an innovative summer employment opportunity for youth from at-risk communities to work with their local police service organization to develop skills relevant to a possible future career in policing.
Pierce has spent the last eight weeks working with the Woodstock Police Service at such events as Kids and Kops, Earn a Bike Program, and Sidewalk Days and gained experience working in the office, observing training with our K-9 unit, and touring the Ontario Police College.
Pierce says she would recommend the experience to anyone looking to get into policing.
"Just learning hand on hand is one of the best things you can because for me, it only helped me want to know what I wanted to do in the future and it really helped me know what courses to take and helped me know everything that I need and want to do which is a good thing."
Pierce says her love for policing has grown with the opportunity and she hopes one day to work with the K9 unit.
"I got to look at all the different units in the station, like the K9, like the dispatching too. It all really showed me what I want to do. Yes I wanted to work with law, I wanted to be a police officer but now I also got to see what else there is just besides being a police officer. Like that was my favourite part, just learning the different things there is to a whole station."
Pierce was selected following an interview and screening process earlier this year.
Woodstock Police say they hope to continue their Summer Student Program next year.
Her last day on the job is Friday, August 22.
