The Ontario Government has Prorogued the Legislature, meaning Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman will have to reintroduce his private members bill on landfills after the Throne Speech on Monday.
The Ontario Government has Prorogued the Legislature.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says her Liberal government will deliver a throne speech on Monday to outline its priorities for the rest of its term.
The move means that everything on the order paper, dies on the order paper and you have to start fresh after the Throne speech. This means the private members bill from Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman's that would give municipalities the right to approve the location of new landfill sites in their communities is now dead. Hardeman says he will now have to reintroduce it and basically start from scratch.
"We will be moving as quickly as possible to reintroduce the bill, the Throne speech is on Monday so that would likely happen on Tuesday or Wednesday and we will be able to just take the same package that we introduced before and reintroduce it into the legislature."
Hardeman says his goal is to still have his private members bill reaching second reading before the election.
"We would be introducing it again as quickly as possible and hopefully get an opportunity to debate it before the election for 2nd reading. If we can get some commitment from the members of the legislature going in, we can know where it is going."
He adds what might cause a problem with this.
"We had a slot lined up to debate it before the election, before the proroguing of the house, with the proroguing of the house they will also have to re draw the priority private members to get the time to do their private members bill, they don't carry on with the same list, so hopefully we get a draw that will allow us to debate this before the election."
Hardeman says he's disappointed they have to start over, but is hopeful they can still have a debate before the election.
