Police say the fraudster will pretend to be from the Woodstock Crown Attorney's office.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is warning the public about a scam in the area, where the culprits pretend to be with the Woodstock Crown Attorney's Office.
According to a post on the police service's Facebook page, the scammers will call from a number that appears to be legitimate and they will use the name of real Crown Attorney to gain your trust.
They will say that they're working with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and claim that you have been the victim of identity theft. They will give you instructions on how to verify your identity and protect your funds. This will involve dropping payments off in a drop box or using a so-called government approved ATM, which is usually just a bitcoin machine. The scammer might also send you documents or a QR code with an official letter head so trick you further.
This is something the real Crown Attorney's Office would never do and the same goes for the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The real Crown Attorney's Office and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre would never contact you in this manner and ask for payments.
The Woodstock Police Service is advising everyone to be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts or e-mails and not use phone numbers, websites, links, or QR codes provided by the alleged scammer.
If you believe you have fallen victim to a scam, you could contact Woodstock Police and your bank.
