There's a new player in the cell phone market in Woodstock. WIND Mobile has officially launched after holding a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning at their Dundas St. location. They've also erected a transmission tower in the south end of the city, and CEO Tony Lacavera says it's part of a 2-Billion dollar 10-year infrastructure plan across Canada. "We usually get coverage of 8-10kms per tower, so you can imagine the size of southwestern Ontario...we need a lot of them." They've launched in London and K-W, and Lacavera says building their network into Woodstock is a key step. "This kind of market is a great growth opportunity for us because the big guys have had a stranglehold on markets like Woodstock for decades. It's great for us and for people in Woodstock, I hope they give us a chance to win their business." In each community that WIND opens in, they also make a contribution to the community. In Woodstock, Big Brothers and Big Sisters are getting 5-thousand dollars for their SOAR program. Case Worker Kristen Ralph explains. "SOAR is a really important program, because we do have 50 kids on our waiting list. SOAR gives the opportunity for the kids to get out with volunteers and get to do things while they're waiting for a big brother or big sister." Big Bros/Big Sister of Woodstock Co-President Sandra Sloan says the 5-thousand dollars is a huge boost to the program. "It can go in so many different directions: physical activities, creative production kinds of things, photography. It's based on the children's talents." It is mostly boys in the SOAR program who waiting for a mentor. Click here for more information if you would like to become a big brother or big sister.
