The Woodstock Wildcats Peewee B girls hockey team sponsored by the Woodstock Professional Firefighters Association captured silver in Niagara Falls over the weekend after losing to Amherst, NY in a shootout in the Championship game. The Wildcats sailed through the Niagara Rapids Fall Tournament round robin undefeated with victories over Mississauga (1-0), Amherst (4-2), Hamilton (5-1) and Hamburg, NY (4-1). With a small team of only 11 players, the task of finishing off the weekend with a victory came very close, but short, against the much larger Amherst team. Head Coach Mark Feledi said the weekend proved valuable as an opportunity for the team to bond as well as to gain experience and conditioning for the season to come. The Wildcats found themselves down 2-0 heading into the third period, but managed to claw their way back with goals from Ashley Feledi and Anakin McMahon, the latter with just 3 minutes remaining in the game. Five minutes of overtime solved nothing, so it went to a shootout where only one goal was scored out six attempts by both teams, with Amherst prevailing. "I was very proud of the girls for fighting back to get into overtime, it's just a shame that we had to lose that way after such a great weekend," exclaimed Feledi. The Wildcats now start their regular season against London on October 9th.
