An ambitious goal of $1.5-million has been set for WDDS's expansion to the downtown core. WDDS CEO John Bedell says they've run out of space. "The community 27 years ago came to the fore and helped us build this building. We are now renting across the road, and have a number of people living downtown that we need to provide opportunities for during the day," said Bedell. Community Development Coordinator Deb Roloson says there are two projects they need funding for. "The Young Street project is already finished construction and people have actually moved in. People are welcome to drive by and see it, it's a beautiful building. The downtown project is just a vision at this point. We know we want to be in the downtown core area and we're scouting out different prospects for the building," said Roloson. Oxford MP Dave MacKenzie thinks the downtown project will become a reality soon. "I think when you look at what they're trying to do, and what they will do. I think that's the important part. There are people that will talk about things, but this organization will do it and I think it'll give opportunities for independent living for a lot of people, some of them very young some a bit older that they wouldn't get otherwise," said MacKenzie. The federal and provincial chipped in $560,000 for the Young St. project. WDDS has not had a capital campaign since 1986 when they built their current location on Bysham Park Drive.
