Tillsonburg councillors unanimously decide to halt a request for public bids on the town's utility company until the public is consulted.
Tillsonburg town councillors want to hear from the public before making any decisions over the future of the town's utility company.
Staff had recommended putting Tillsonburg Hydro on the market for sale or merger to the highest bidder in a public request for proposal process.
"You wouldn't believe the number of calls and emails I received after people saw the agenda online," said Town Councillor Marty Klein. He submitted the motion for deferral, which was unanimously supported by his peers.
"The view was consistently that the public needs a chance to look at this first."
Klein said every phone call and email he has received from residents has been against asking for bids on the utility.
"If that's a picture of the community then I guess that would be the case, but we need to listen to [the public] first," he said.
Staff has been directed report back to council at the March 24 council meeting with a format to conduct public consultations.
