Above zero temperatures could create dangerous conditions around watercourses as water levels rise.
WOODSTOCK - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is warning residents to use extreme caution around any bodies of water. Marketing Specialist for the Upper Thames River Conservation Area Steve Sauder discusses the melting snow and potential hazards around water ways when the temperature rises. "We are expecting to see some melting over the next few days. It has been a slow melt, we will start to see streams and rivers rise, and we are concerned about children and other people being near these open waterways because the water is extremely cold."
Flooding is expected to be minor and should occur only in the traditional floodplain areas. Sauder explains that this is the perfect way to welcome spring. "This is an excellent way to move into spring! It really works very nicely in turns of moisture to move more freely into the soil. It's also really good for farm fields because we don't tend to get the real erosion which is because of the quick melts when the water is moving very quickly down steep slopes."
Sauder wants to remind you of one thing people might forget when the ice melts. "One of the things that people don't always think about is as we do get these milder temperatures and we get some water moving what that can actually do is shift the ice move it away from the shoreline. It can actually create other cracks and changes in the ice so what you think maybe is safe is actually not." The Conservation authority are encouraging parents to talk to their children about the potential dangers posed, and to keep both children and pets well away from any hazards.
