Mayor Trevor Birtch and Warden for Oxford County Larry Martin visited Taiwan earlier this month.
WOODSTOCK - Mayor Trevor Birtch arrived home from Taiwan recently.
He was joined by Warden for Oxford County Larry Martin and they learned more about the country's initiatives and technologies to improve their environment, during an cultural exchange trip with students from Woodstock Collegiate Institute.
Mayor Birtch and Warden Martin were in business and government meetings, meeting new industries during their stay, arranged by the Taiwan Trade Office, and Mayor Birtch says they learned about some new technologies that could help Oxford County.
"Taiwan used to be heavily polluted with water that you could not drink and air that was polluted and garbage, and now Taiwan is one of the jewels of Asia. They have been teaching young people in elementary school about proper recycling and how to protect the environment, and that you don't necessarily have to give up on the economy in order to protect the environment, that the two go hand in hand. And what we see today is a Taiwan that has clean air and clean water and some of the most rigorous recycling and sustainability practices in the world. So, when we look at Oxford County and our sustainability goals and zero waste, we know that a lot of these technologies that are employed in Taiwan would be something that would be welcome here in our community."
Birtch says it was a great experience overall.
"All in all, a great trip. I got to meet a lot of wonderful people and see a lot of new technologies that would help our community here."
The trip lasted for 8 days, going from March 8th to 16th.
Birtch says they'll be expecting some visitors to the International Renewable Energy Academy in June, along with other investors throughout the year.
