You should never leave your pet in vehicle on a hot summer day.
OXFORD - If you're feeling uncomfortable in the hot and humid weather, imagine what it's like for a dog.
The Oxford County Animal Rescue has some tips for pet owners this summer. Foster Coordinator Anna Holmes says you should think twice before taking the dog for a walk.
"When you're out walking your dog and they are walking on the sidewalk or asphalt, get them on the grass! If you took off your shoe and you set your barefoot on the pavement for five seconds, how hot is that?"
You should also make sure your dog has access to shade and fresh water when you let them outside.
Homes would like to remind everyone about the dangerous of pets in hot vehicles.
"Please don't leave your dog in the car when you go out to run errands. Even if you're only going to be done for two minutes, it doesn't take long! If you have air conditioning at home, that is where you animal should be."
Even if you leave the vehicle running with the air conditioning on full blast, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society says it's a bad idea because your pet would be in danger if your vehicle malfunctioned.
The signs of heat stroke in a dog include excessive panting and drooling. They could also lack physical energy and possibly go unconscious.
If you have access to the animal in distress, the SPCA says you should immediately wet the fur in cool water, not cold water. You should also bring them to a shady area and offer them water to drink. If you believe the animal is suffering from heat stroke, seek veterinary attention right away.
If you come across a pet in a hot vehicle, the SPCA says you could call local police or Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9Animal. It is illegal to break someone's car window, even if you have good intentions.
