Eating Disorders Awareness Week is wrapping up, but Southwestern Public Health is making sure the talks continue.
OXFORD COUNTY - Eating disorders are something that are on the rise.
Today (Wednesday, February 7th) marks the final day of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and Southwestern Public Health is making sure tips and resources are available.
Registered Dietitian with SWPH, Kelly Ferguson says eating disorders are serious and complex mental illnesses.
"They exist on a spectrum, from disorder eating habits, which could include things like dieting to lose weight, cutting out big food groups, skipping meals, or getting real intense about exercise."
Ferguson adds the behaviours are what could get more severe and turn into eating disorders.
She says healthy conversations go a long way.
"It's important we talk to kids about how media, including social media, can impact our body image, and how the pictures we see on social media don't depict reality, so giving them that lens of critical media literacy is really important."
Southwestern Public Health has released food tips, which can help make sure children have a positive relationship between food and their bodies.
