It's Dry January, so the Southwestern Public Health Unit is encouraging everyone to stop drinking alcohol for the month.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health is supporting Dry January, which encourages people to not drink alcohol throughout the month.
It first started in the British Health Initiative as Alcohol Change UK and SWPH Health Promotor Jessica Austin says the program has only grown since then.
"Since 2003, this kind of initiative has gone worldwide and has become popular on social media, our dry January has even extended into dry February."
Austin explains how the local health unit is supporting the initiative.
"We are working closely with health care providers to share the latest reports, and some of the abilities as individuals do explore their relationship with alcohol throughout these two months."
Austin adds, people that who find themselves not being able to stop drinking need to be able to get the proper medical help so they can find ways to cope.
She also says the Southwestern Public Health region has a higher mortality rate for alcohol toxicity. As of 2021, the health unit had a rate of 3.4 for a population of 100,000 while the provincial rate was 2.5 for 100,000 people.
