Those living with a serious illness in the Southwestern Public Health region can receive a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, but they must provide a doctors note.
OXFORD/ST.THOMAS/ELGIN - Southwestern Public Health is administering third doses to high risk individuals.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock says third doses are only going to people with a serious illness.
"These are people with certain cancers who have undergone a transplant or have an autoimmune disorder. Because of their health conditions, these individuals need a third dose to help them achieve the level of immunity the rest of us get from two doses."
Dr. Lock says you will need to provide a letter from your doctor, indicating why you need a third dose.
"To qualify for a third dose, an individual needs a supporting letter from their doctor, please bring that letter with you when you arrive at the clinic for your vaccination. Third doses are not available to people who want to have two matching doses for the purpose of travel or for members of the general population."
The Health Unit is not currently administering third doses to residents of Long Term Care homes.
