The Township would like to see more people running in the municipal election this fall.
SWOX - South-West Oxford would like to see more people running in this year's municipal election.
It will be hosting two candidate information sessions; one at the Brownsville Fire Station on Wednesday and one at the Beachville Fire Station a week from today. Both of the open house style events will be taking place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and you don't have to register beforehand.
South-West Oxford did not have a lot of candidates in the previous two municipal elections. Five of the seven council positions were acclaimed in 2018, while two people ran for the Ward 2 council seat and three people ran for the Ward 6 council seat. The ballot was even smaller in 2022, with six acclaimed positions and two people running for the Ward 1 council seat.
Denny Giles, the Clerk and Manager of Legislative Services for the Township, says council directed staff to host these information sessions to encourage more residents will throw their hat in the ring.
"So we're just trying to engage the public more for the 2026 election that's coming up in October. By hosting these sessions, we're just hoping to get some community engagement and people that are interested in contributing to their municipality."
Both sessions will offer a brief overview of everything you should know if you're running for council in South-West Oxford. This includes explanations of the positions and the application process. Those who attend will also receive a copy of the Ontario Municipal Councillors Guide.
Giles says it will be a brief crash course, before the candidate information session the Oxford County is hosting on Thursday, March 26th.
"The purpose for holding these first is to hopefully get some more community session and then advertise that session at the end of March to have further engagement from the community for interest in running for the municipal election."
The County session will be taking place in the Council Chambers Oxford County Administration Building with a 6:00 p.m. start time and you can find more information online here.
