19 teams from across the Thames Valley District School board will compete in the Oxford Invitational Youth Robotics Challenge
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford Invitational Youth Robotics Challenge has one mission: seek and deliver.
Former Mayor of Woodstock, Michael Harding, says this competition gives students a chance to flex their big brain muscles. "10 years ago we brought together some schools that were local in the City of Woodstock and had a competition. We're drawing 19 teams right across the Thames Valley School Board but more importantly we want diversity and that is what we are getting this year." Once the teams complete their creations they are judged and one group will win the top honour.
Seventeen schools will attempt to build the best robot and Harding explains what task those robots need to accomplish. "Last year the robots were to deliver 3 different colours and they mirror a manufacturing process. We wanted to make sure that they had a little bit of a taste in terms of how that worked, so delivering tubes recognizing colours and they build their robots from the ground up."
"Each year every challenge is judged we have people going around and industry experts who come and judge each of those presentations," Harding says. "It is very very specific because we use Lego; this Mindstorm kit is quite the challenge for these young people which they learn very quickly."
The competition will take place on November 24th from 3-5pm at the Goff Hall in the Community Complex.
