Grade 9 to 12 students are invited to take part in a survey that can help shape the education system
WOODSTOCK - Students at St. Mary's Catholic High School in Woodstock have been selected to take part in a survey designed to help shape the health of school environments.
The University of Waterloo has launched the COMPASS Survey designed to take a look at students' lifestyle choices, along with programs in place at schools that are designed to help make healthy lifestyle choices easier for students. The survey investigates factors such as drug and alcohol use, physical activity and sedentary behavior.
Scott Leatherdale, the Principal Investigator and an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo says the survey is not only about finding weaknesses, but also about finidng strengths.
"If there are problems identified, or strengths identified, here's what you can do to change them, or to maintain them within the student population."
The survey spans three years and will follow the same group of students, ranging from grades 9-12. The results are then shared with St. Mary's and the Thames Valley District School Board, who can then use the results to implement, restructure and maintain programs designed to make it easier for students to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Parents looking for details about the COMPASS survey can contact Christie Ledgley at 519-888-4567 ex. 36707, by email at: cledgely@uwaterloo.ca or visit the COMPASS project website at www.compass.uwaterloo.ca
