If you're not careful about your on-line dating activity, you could get your heart and your bank account broken. A new scam making the rounds, called the "Romance Scam", sees the victim befriended by someone on-line. It could be through a dating website, or other social media site. But after developing the relationship, the scammer makes a sudden, urgent request for money, by saying they're having problems in customs, or need money to get out of a foreign country. Woodstock Police Constable Steve McEwen says you have to be aware someone you meet on-line may not be who they claim to be. "With Facebook and all these other social media things that we have, there are people out there that could be lying to you. Anybody can post a picture of somebody else right? And report it to be them. There are legitimate dating sites out there where people are trying to meet people, that can happen but we just have to be aware that there are people out there that are trying to scam us and rip us off." Police say as a rule, don't wire transfer money or offer credit card information to someone you really don't know.
