A local resident has fallen victim to a 'grandparent/parent scam' and the OPP are reminding you to be suspicious of phone calls asking for money.
A scammer hit their mark in Oxford County with a 'grandparent/parent scam.'
OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says a local resident is out a considerable chunk of change after responding to a scam phone call. "This time there was approximately $900 lost. And again what we're seeing here is that these suspects are praying on people and their emotions because they're asking people to give them money in order to help their loved ones. And unfortunately people are falling victim before they become suspicious and phone police."
The suspect told the victim that their daughter had been in an accident, arrested, and required bail money.
Naranscik says the best thing to do when you believe someone is trying to fool you with a grandparent/parent scam is to call family members directly. "They can phone - if someone is phoning saying your grandson or granddaughter has been injured, phone their parents to confirm that the student or the young person is actually travelling. We've often found that if they phone their grandchild directly they will answer and say 'No, what's going on? I'm available.'
As with any scam, when someone starts asking for money alarm bells should immediately go off in your head. "We can hang up the phone when people phone and start asking for money. As soon as someone asks you to wire them money via Western Union or whatever source they're looking for you should become suspicious," Naranscik says. "If someone is phoning and acting as a lawyer they will give you time - say you're going to call police to confirm the information."
The Oxford OPP are also dealing with a number of calls about the Canadian Revenue Agency scam. The best thing to do is simply hang up.
