A Tillsonburg resident is looking to make the streets safer in his community with a new program.

TILLSONBURG - A Tillsonburg resident is looking to make the streets safer in his community by starting a Neighbourhood Watch Program.

Mark Cheron has gone to Town Council with the request and believes this is a service needed in the community.

"Since we have moved here -- a year ago this July -- there have been a lot of break ins and I'm trying to do what I can to stop that and there is no Neighbourhood Watch Program in this town right now and I thought I would start that."

While Cheron awaits a decision from Council on the program (which he hopes comes in December), he has entered the project into the Aviva Community Fund contest and says if he wins, the money will go toward starting up the program.

"We have to register to be a non-profit charitable organization so that will cost a lawyer plus the fees the government charges to apply for that. There are advertising costs, there are printing costs. I'm going to be doing this full time so I need to be paid a bit. Just $15,000 a year which is pretty low." Cheron says there are lots of office materials that will need to be purchased as well as internet.

Cheron says the community can get involved by voting in the contest.

"They go on to avivacommunityfund.org and they will go into the Tillsonburg Community Neighbourhood Watch and that will take them to where they need to vote."

Voting for Round 2 ends November 3rd.
