The Insurance Bureau of Canada has donated carbon monoxide alarms to some of our local fire stations.
The fire stations in Norwich, Tillsonburg and Ingersoll have new carbon monoxide alarms thanks to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Each station received 50 new alarms on Friday. Ingersoll Fire Chief John Holmes says they dispersed out into the community.
"It's surprising how many homes we still go to where people have outdated alarms, possibly no batteries in them or just don't have alarms at all. That tells me that they're not aware of the importance of them or the fact that they are the law."
Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman and John Gignac of the Hawkins Gignac Foundations were also present for the donations. Hardeman worked alongside the Hawkins Gignac Foundation in order to introduce a bill to make it law to have carbon monoxide alarms in every home in Ontario.
But Hardeman says we still need to raise awareness.
"It's one thing to have to have them, but how do you get everybody aware of the need and the importance of it. Since then we have been trying to build awareness to make sure everybody understands the importance of the silent killer."
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that can be deadly when found inside a home.
