Oxford Council is waiting for approval from Tillsonburg Council to reroute the Trans Canada Trail along the former CASO rail line.
TILLSONBURG - Oxford County Council has approved a route change for the upcoming Trans Canada Trail in Tillsonburg. Instead of going along Oxford Road 20, Oxford County Public Works would like to redirect the route to the former CASO rail line.
Director of Public Works Robert Walton tells Heart FM they have considered re-routing the trail to the rail line for quite some time now.
"This actually always was contemplated but the purchase by the county of the former CASO rail line only completed the property sale transaction in October."
Walton adds re-routing the trail will have no extra cost to the county.
"The good news in the report to council today is that the budget is there to complete this section of the trail and that will happen now as approved by County Council as long as Tillsonburg Council approves at their next meeting which is Monday night."
The original total budget for the trail was $870,000 but Walton believes it will cost about $800,000 to construct in the end. Re-routing to the CASO rail line will cost about $200,000.
The Trans Canada Trail will have a public opening in the spring but snowmobile drivers will be able to take advantage of small parts of the trail this winter.
