Police Warn About Online Scams

Recently a Stratford Woman clicked on an online pop up that told her she had won a prize for being a Rogers customer. The ad looked legit, however she did have to pay $1 fee using her credit card to claim the prize.

STRATFORD - Stratford Police are warning the public about another fraud making the rounds in the region. 

On Saturday police received a complaint from a woman who received a pop up ad on her iPad. The ad congratulated her on winning a prize, simply for being a Rogers Customer. In order to claim the prize, she was asked to do a short survey and then pay a $1 fee with her credit card. 

When the woman contacted Rogers, they told her that this was a scam. It was later discovered that the scammer had already used her credit card to make several purchases. Luckily in this case, she was able to cancel her card in time and no financial loss occurred. 

The police are once again reminding the public that if something seems too good to be true, it likely is. It is important to take the time making phone calls and asking questions prior to providing any personal information to verify if what you are being offered is true or not. 

The Stratford Police appreciate that the complainant in this matter filed a report regarding this incident as it allows for the public to become aware of these incidents with the
hope of future scams from occurring. Reports of this nature can also be made to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
