Woodstock Firefighters have a new job delivering pizza's.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department is serving up some fire prevention knowledge with a side of pizza.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says the Smoke Alarms for Pizza Program is back. "We follow the delivery driver and we knock on the door with them and say, 'Hey we're from the fire department, it's fire prevention week. We'd love to pay for your dinner, and if you have working smoke alarms we'd love to do that, do you mind if we come in and check?' And so far everybody's said, 'No, that's great, come in. That's awesome.'" So far all the homes they have visited this week have been up to code, and therefore had a free dinner of behalf of the Woodstock Fire Department.
Woods says most people seem surprised when they find the Woodstock Fire Department waiting with their pizza. "No, surprisingly they are actually surprised. I mean, we get a lot of coverage on our social media. But the people we've pulled up to so far have been surprised. I think during that rush hour dinner thing the last thing they're thinking about is the Fire Department showing up with their pizza."
This program has already proved its value, saving one family last year. "Last year we had 10 different pizza places that we were delivering from. Out of the 10, 9 had working smoke alarms and in the tenth house we actually gave them working smoke alarms on each level. A few weeks later they had a fire and were only awakened because of the sound of the smoke alarm."
The money for this program comes from a donation from Union Gas as well as a partnership with the pizzerias themselves.
