Oxford County staff will determine if our community safety zones would benefit from automated speed enforcement.
OXFORD COUNTY - Is photo radar worth it in Oxford County? That's the question that County Council would like to answer.
It has considered automated speed enforcement for a few years but wanted to see how effective it was in other municipalities first.
During last week's meeting, council directed staff to collect data to see if any of our community safety zones would benefit from having photo radar.
Warden Marcus Ryan says that data will be brought back to council during the budget discussions for 2025.
"Informed by the Budget Survey, we will decide whether we want to spend that money at that time or not and further consider automated speed enforcement."
He stresses that nothing is set in stone at this time.
"At this point, council hasn't decided that we will do photo radar or we won't. We just need to get more information to know whether we think it will work or not."
Automated speed enforcement, or photo radar, uses a camera or a speed measuring device to see how fast vehicles are going. If someone is caught speeding, the municipality would be able to collect a fee from them as a penalty.
