A pet is a long-term commitment, so you should really think twice before deciding to give someone a cat or a dog for Christmas this year.
OXFORD COUNTY - Christmas is only a few weeks away and lots of people are scrambling to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones.
Anna Holmes with the Oxford County Animal Rescue says you should really think twice before deciding to give a pet as a present.
"A pet is a long-term commitment, you have to consider 12 to 20 years for a cat or a dog. Also everything is so busy during the Christmas season and there are so many things that they can get into that could possibly harm them."
Holmes says having a pet can also cost you a lot of money in the long-run.
"If you're lucky enough to have an animal who is well and can eat a quality food that you can purchase at a pet store, you're still looking at a fair chunk of money to buy them a quality food to eat. Not to mention their yearly vet visits and you need to be prepared if there is ever an emergency as well."
The Oxford County Animal Rescue does have a screening process in order to find the right home for each animal and you can read more about their adoption procedures online here.
The rescue is currently caring for 75 cats and kittens at the moment, which is a significant increase compared to their usual average of 10-15 felines for this time of the year. Twelve cats are currently listed for adoption on the Oxford County Animal Rescue's website.
You can help the Oxford County Animal Rescue this holiday season by supporting their online auction. They have over 100 items up for grabs and there's something for everyone. The auction closes December 11th and you can find more information online here.
