Oxford County Warden Marcus Ryan is calling on his fellow elected officials to attend the Oxford County Pride Family Day on Saturday June 17th to show support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Warden Marcus Ryan has issued a challenge to all of the elected officials in our community.
He would like everyone to attend the Oxford County Pride Family Day at Woodstock's Museum Square on Saturday June 17th.
"I want us to move on as a society and as a community from debating whether people are included or not. We have plenty of other things that we can disagree about how to make our community better, but whether everybody is included or not should not be one of them."
Warden Ryan officially launched the challenge on Friday, just days after Oxford County Council heard an emotional delegation from Oxford County Pride President Tami Murray. She asked for the Progress flag to be flown on county-owned property and for County Council to declare June as Pride Month. Council signed off on it to show support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
The delegation to County Council took place one day after Norwich Township Council passed a motion to introduce a flag policy, mandating that only government flags be flown on township-owned property. Township Council also did not support a motion to declare June as Pride Month during that same meeting.
Since launching the Pride Challenge, Warden Ryan has received a positive response from the community. He has heard a few informal responses from some of his fellow elected officials saying they will be attending Pride Family Day, but nothing formal at this time. He is planning on relaunching the challenge again before Pride Month begins on June 1st and before Pride Family Day on June 17th.
