Oxford County is approaching high speed internet with renewed vigor and a five year commitment to SWIFT.
Oxford County has a five year commitment to the Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology project or SWIFT in an effort to provide high speed Internet across the County.
This year the County will pay $140,844 and $704,240 in total. Warden David Mayberry says SWIFT will improve the high speed Internet connection in Oxford County.
"The volume of material that needs to move through the Internet is increasing exponentially, so we have to put in a system, which is really this glass fibre that will handle the volume of traffic that we want to put on it."
SWIFT’s mandate is to build the fibre optic network in Ontario’s underdeveloped regions, bringing high-speed broadband to everyone. Mayberry says this is not going to be a quick process.
"It could take us 10, 15, or even 20 years to get fibre up and down every road because it is expensive, so it's going to take awhile but what we want to do is make sure we have the network in place up front so that when we do get to hooking up each of the concessions and streets in town that they have something to be hooked up too."
Mayberry says the first step will be to get the points of presence set and then after that we will start hooking up people.
