A holiday weekend is upon us, and the Woodstock Fire Department wants to make sure they don't have to attend your celebration.
WOODSTOCK - It is the first long weekend of Fall.
Families and friends will be getting together to celebrate Thanksgiving throughout the weekend, which means dinners and lots of cooking. Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods, shares some ways you can try to avoid a fire this holiday weekend.
"The number one reason we have kitchen fires is actually unattended cooking. So, we want to make sure that people are staying in the kitchen when they're cooking, putting timers on, taking a spoon or a cloth or something to remind them that they have something on the stove."
Woods says anytime there is a large gathering of people in a home, there needs to be a kid-free zone around the stove, oven, or anything that can be dangerous. Woods says what you could do to avoid potential hazards.
"Having a big group over, maybe plan ahead, cook ahead, and then only have to warm up things."
Woods adds that if you are planning on having a few drinks this holiday weekend, maybe order in. She also says you should make sure your fire and carbon monoxide alarms are working, and if they are not, get them replaced before having a large gathering.
