OPP Launch Distracted Driving Campaign

OPP across Ontario are taking a hard stance against Distracted Driving with their annual campaign.

OXFORD - Drivers are being encouraged to pay attention to the road or face the consequences.

Oxford County OPP will be taking part in the annual Distracted Driving Campaign - So far this year 12 deaths have already been reported where distracted driving was a factor. Constable Stacey Culbert of Oxford County OPP says the aim of the campaign is targeted enforcement, and to get people thinking about the dangers of distracted driving.

Distracted driving consists of anything that takes the driver's attention away from the road, whether that be adjusting the radio, plugging in an Ipod, using a cell phone, or dealing with children in the back seat. Current provincial law makes it illegal for drivers to type, text, call, or email using a handheld device such as cell phones and other communication devices.

Constable Culbert also notes that distract driving has become a major factor in fatal collisions over the last few years.

This year alone driver inattention has been a factor in at least 12 fatal collisions, some of those involving pedestrains.
