Transport trucks across the Province and on the 401 through Oxford County will be under some intense scrutiny during Operation Corridor.
The OPP and Ministry of Transportation will be monitoring the 400 series highways in Ontario including the 401 through Oxford County from June 16th to the 17th and stopping transports. OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor tells Heart FM they understand the transport trucks are not always the problem and that everybody has a shared responsibility of safety on our highways. "Commercial motor vehicle operators have a hard job, they deal with a lot of crazy drivers that we see every day, we will not let that go unoticed either we will continue with our regular enforcement and education, however for these two days June 16th and 17th we will be focusing on Commercial motor vehicles to make sure they are holding up their end of the bargain."
Last year in Ontario transports were involved in 6,140 collisions and 69 people lost their lives. Rektor says they want truck drivers to realize when you are behind the wheel of a transport you have a big responsibility because when things go bad they are usually catastrophic. Police will be checking log books during operation corridor and make sure the transport trucks are keeping the proper 60 metres of distance between vehicles. Rektor says one of the biggest causing of collisions is following to closely because the big trucks can't stop on a dime, especially if they have a full load. Another problem Rektor sees is the trucks going too fast during inclement weather.
