Resources available for those struggling with mental health issues
WOODSTOCK - As more information comes out about the death of Robin Williams, local health officials are taking the time to remind everyone that they are not alone.
Sheriff's official announced today that Williams committed suicide by hanging himself at his San Francisco home.
Woodstock and Area Community Health Centre Outreach Social Worker Jenilee Cook says she was sad when she heard the news about Williams.
"It's another reminder of how those faced with struggles can become prisoners of their illnesses. Bound by stigma, misconceptions and a lack of appropriate supports and we need to talk about the supports are there but the wait lists are long and the stigma against reaching out is strong."
Cook says we need to create spaces for people to be open and have real conversations about mental health and suicide where they feel heard, understood and not judged.
"For those who are struggling, those in silence too, please know that you're not alone and you don't have to struggle alone either. There's only one of you and you matter and that's the message we need people to hear. You're stronger than you think and you're braver than you feel and you really need to reach out to those around you and to the services that are available" says Cook.
"I'm always encouraging people to reach out to their doctors, their friends, a teacher, a councillor, to go on Google and Google the Kids Help Line or to write 'Love' on their arms and connect with people who are sharing struggles with you."
