Amanda Nelson finished first in the Persistence Backyard Ultra and will now represent Team Canada at the Backyard Ultra Satellite World Championships this October.
WOOODSTOCK - A local Woodstonian has made the Friendly City proud, finishing in first place in the Persistence Backyard Ultra.
The last person standing event took place in London this past Friday and Saturday. All of the competitors must run 6.7 kilometres every hour, on the hour, and Amanda Nelson was the winner in the end.
Nelson currently holds the women's 100 Mile National Record and the 12 Hour National Record. She was a little nervous going into this event because she had never done a race longer than 24 hours before and she wasn't sure how long this race would last.
She did a lot of long runs with high mileage while training for the event, so she was feeling pretty good once the race first started.
"When I started I felt good, but as the day went on I started to wonder how long it was going to go and how long I had to keep being ready on the hour to start again. You literally have no idea who is going to be the last one who is able to go."
Nelson only had to go one lap further than the competitor behind her in order to win the race. She ran 33 yards and just over 221 kilometres in the end.
Nelson will now get to represent Team Canada at the Backyard Ultra Satellite World Championships in British Columbia this October. She's really grateful that her friends Mickey and Cricket Scott have started a GoFundMe page to cover the trip to the west coast.
"I have to pay for everything to get myself to BC to represent Canada. So I have to pay for the flights, the hotel, the car rental, supplies, fuel, and everything I need for this race."
