Khadijah Haliru is Oxford County's NDP candidate for the provincial election.
OXFORD COUNTY - An Ingersoll Town Councillor is looking to become the next MPP for Oxford County.
Khadijah Haliru will represent the NDP in the upcoming provincial election.
"Health care, education and disability care were big triggers for me, so when I saw the opportunity I thought definitely! Even if it is just lending my voice to remind people that you have choices here. The direction we're going with this Premier is more talk and there's really no tangibility."
She was first elected to Ingersoll Town Council in October 2022, becoming the first black woman take on the role. She has accomplished a lot since then, serving as a member of the Police Services Board, pushing for the creation of a diversity committee, and asking town staff to clarify the taxi bylaw.
She says residents wanted more than just one cab service in town.
"We had heard enough of people complaining that we needed to have some competition to make everyone feel like they were serviced. So as soon as I did that we had two new services come to town."
Even though she's in the running to become our next MPP, Haliru says it will not affect her duties as a Ingersoll Town Councillor.
"I am still dedicated fully to my job even as I run, so I'm hoping that will keep people at ease."
If Haliru wins the election, Town Council will have to declare her seat vacant and determine the next steps from there.
Outside of her political career, some people might know Haliru as the owner of Hanak Foods and K Beauty Brand.
Ontarians will head to the polls on Thursday February 27th.
