Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Ontario, killing more than 13,000 Ontarians every year, just one of the statistics prompting the latest campaign encouraging people to break the habit.
OXFORD COUNTY - Today is World no tobacco day and our local health unit is encouraging everyone to butt out.
Southwestern Public Health has launched a new campaign today called my last cigarette. It will run for the month of June using a variety of platforms across the community including online, radio, and an in-person event featuring an interactive art experience. The health unit will share stories of former smokers or those impacted by tobacco with the goal of encouraging smokers to make a quit attempt. For those who want information or help quitting smoking, supports and resources will be available through the health unit and through programs like the Canadian Cancer Society’s Smokers’ Helpline.
Health Promoter Ashlyn Brown says they understand that quitting smoking is often a process and just because a smoker slips and
has a cigarette doesn't mean their attempt to quit has failed.
"It often takes many attempts to quit smoking for good. The skills that people build each time they attempt to quit smoking and the support that they receive while quitting can increase the chances of quitting for good.”
Smoking kills half of all long-term users and tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Ontario, killing more than 13,000 Ontarians every year. From 2015 to 2016, there were higher proportions of adults who were current smokers in the SWPH region compared to Ontario, with 23% of adults in the SWPH region current smokers compared to 18% for Ontario.
