OPP will be out in full force this weekend watching for distracted, impaired and aggressive drivers.
OXFORD COUNTY -- OPP say that the number of "move over" law charges are at the highest they've been since 2010.
The law, which came into effect 10 years ago, requires motorists to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. On multi lane highways, vehicles need to move over a lane if it can be done safely.
According to Constable Stacey Culbert, not obeying this law could leave you with a hefty fine. "Failure to do so in an emergency where there's a vehicle parked on the side of the road can result in a fine of $400 to $2,000 plus three demerit points."
In 2013, there were 1,502 fines issued across Ontario, a number that has been steadily increasing. Culbert highlights that it is an ongoing issue in Oxford County as well. "As recently as January of this year we had two separate incidents on the same day where OPP cruisers parked on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated were struck. Luckily in both of those cases our officers only received minor injures but it certainly serves as a reminder that you know we just wish people would obey this law particularly, especially be cognisant of it on the long weekend."
Locally, from January to June issued 15 fines for not obeying the law.
Culbert says officers will be out in full force this long weekend watching for distracted, impaired and aggressive drivers.
