Local MP Dave MacKenzie says law enforcement background trained him not to be afraid as shots were fired outside of his caucus meeting Wednesday
OTTAWA - Local MP Dave MacKenzie says he has already visited the National War Memorial as well as attended a meeting on Parliament Hill less than 24 hours after yesterday's fatal shooting.
MacKenzie says the gunfire in the halls of Parliament Wednesday was right outside of his caucus room and there was no mistaking what was going on.
"Perhaps my background (in law enforcement) changes your feelings a little bit different then it does other people. You recognize what it is and there's not the fear kind of thing but there is an urgency that you have to take some sort of a protective stance in the situation and that's what occurred in the room."
MacKenzie was put into lock down until around 7:30 last evening and says they were made aware of the situation early on.
MacKenzie has already visited the National War Memorial this morning and stood among large crowds.
"I think people are extremely respective of the fact that the reservist was shot and killed at what is a very important memorial in Ottawa and for all Canadians and I think that is a very somber situation. I have already been to a meeting on the Hill and certainly security has changed and processes and protocols are changing."
MacKenzie says sometimes we let our guard down and policies inside the Parliament Buildings need to change.
"I've never been to any other nation's capital where people can play football on the front lawn or protest on the front lawn and I don't see that likely changing. I think that as Canadians we relish our opportunities for democracy close to the Hill but I'm sure protocol inside the buildings particularly will change."
MacKenzie says his heart goes out to the family of Corporal Nathan Cirillo who was shot and killed at the National War Memorial.
