Last Day To Get Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Today is the deadline to have your carbon monoxide detectors installed.

WOODSTOCK - Today is the final compliance day under the new carbon monoxide legislation.

All buildings that have more than 6 residential rooms or suites must install carbon monoxide alarms. All suites that contain a fuel burning device, whether it runs on natural gas, oil, coal, or something similar, must have a working CO alarm. Fire Prevention Officer Jeff Slager tells us it's a little different for suites that don't have fuel burning appliances. "Now if these are all provided by electric heat or a boiler or something like that, then it's only the units that share a wall, ceiling, or floor with a room that contains a fuel fired appliance."

Failure to comply with these laws could net landlords, property managers, or owners in a lot of trouble. Slager tells us failure to comply is treated similarly to failure to install smoke alarms. "If you fail to provide or maintain it can be upwards of a $360 ticket. If it winds up being a chronic problem it can end up having an owner called before a provincial court and a fine there could range up to $50 000 and/or a year in jail."

Slager tells us they have been focusing mainly on education so far, but if tenants are worried about their suite, they should talk to their landlord first. "If you have an issue with it and you have previously notified the landlord and you're still not getting a satisfactory result you can contact the Woodstock Fire Department - call the Fire Prevention Division and it's something we can take up with. It is a violation. We will try to notify the landlord and try to get them to correct the situation before we get too heavily involved."
