WFD continue to stress that working alarms in the household can save lives.

WOODSTOCK -- It's a situation that could have been a lot worse.

The Woodstock Fire Department responded to a call on Lancaster Street Wednesday morning after receiving reports of a kitchen fire.

Two people that were inside the home at the time extinguished the blaze and were waiting outside when the fire department arrived .  They were taken to hospital to be treated for undisclosed treatment.

After a brief investigation, it was determined that the home did not have working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms.

Deputy Chief Brian Arnold is reminding homeowners that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives and must be tested regularly to ensure they work properly.  "We can’t stress enough that smoke alarms save lives! The smoke in a fire puts you into a deeper sleep and will not wake you in the event of a fire in your home"

They suggest testing all alarms in the home every month.  If the alarm fails to sound, check the batteries to ensure they are installed correctly or put fresh batteries in the alarm.  They also suggest changing the batteries twice a year, or when the low-battery warning sounds.  Alarms should be replaced every day 10 years as well.

They are also taking this incident to serve as a reminder to the public the importance of staying in the kitchen while cooking and encourage people to cook at reasonable temperature especially when dealing with grease.
