Hot Weather Good For Some Crops

Corn and soybean producers were happy to see the warmer, drier weather over the weekend.

Farmers in Oxford County with corn and soybeans in the ground certainly appreciated the heat over the weekend. 

Provincial Soybean Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs Horst Bohner says the crops really need the heat after a wet summer. "While I think that we had some real growth this past weekend, we still need a lot more of the growing season yet before we have crops. But at least there is hope now and there is enough of the growing season left that if it even turns half way normal from here on in we can still hope for a decent crop." 

Bohner says it has been an extraordinary year for rainfall this summer and some producers have gotten more than 14 inches of rain now. The wet weather is creating havoc for farmers as the corn is short on nitrogen and the soybeans have more root rot than usual. Bohner says there is enough of the growing season left to turn things around and the heat from the weekend was a good start. He says it impossible to predict a yield at this point in the growing season and we have seen in past years where the crops are looking really good at this point and things head south and we have seen it do the opposite.
