OXFORD COUNTY - The merger between Oxford County Public Health and the Elgin St Thomas Health Unit is right around the corner.
A regulatory change to the Health Protection and Promotion Act has been approved, which was the last procedural step before the merger takes place. It lays out the geographical boundaries, the municipal board membership and the official name; the Oxford County, Elgin and St Thomas Public Health Board.
It also sets the official merger date as May 1st 2018, but Warden David Mayberry says there's still a lot of work that still needs to be done.
"There's no way we will be fully functional by the first of May. It's just impossible; you have to go through CRA because all of the employees will have to be converted over to a new pay system, there's an alignment of various software programs that need to be figured out and all of that sort of stuff. Over the next couple of months we hope that we can have a relatively smooth transition to a single entity."
Mayberry adds members of the general public shouldn't notice a difference.
"The nice thing about Public Health is you don't actually see it. A lot of it is preventative and trying to take care of problems before they become real problems in the community and that's a lot of the work we'll see done."
The new health board will serve about 204,000 people with 180 employees.
