UPDATE: Hardeman's Hospitality Bill Passes

We now have an appreciation day for hospitality workers in Ontario.

UPDATE (December 8th @ 10:30 a.m.) - It's official, February 23rd will now be known as Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day in Ontario.

The bill passed in the legislature with unanimous support last Thursday.

Hardeman is proud of this accomplishment.

OXFORD - Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman's latest private members bill has reached a second reading in the legislature.

If it's passed, February 23rd would officially become Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day in Ontario. The bill also encourages Ontarians to support local restaurants, hotels, tourism operations, arts, culture, and heritage, as well as small businesses.

Hardeman says it's all about giving hospitality workers the credit they have earned.

"Behind every memorable experience, whether it’s a welcoming place to stay, a delicious meal, a vibrant cultural moment, an outdoor adventure, or the journey that takes you there, are dedicated hospitality workers bringing it all to life."

Hardeman worked closely with Danny Murrell, the CEO of Harrison Staffing, to bring this bill to life.

Murrell immigrated to Canada hand he got his start in the hospitality sector.

"Hospitality gave me my first chance to work, build stability, and start toward my Canadian dream I’m grateful to see this bill move forward, not only as overdue recognition for hospitality professionals, but as a meaningful step in supporting workers’ well-being and long-term success. At Harrison Staffing, we see every day how powerful it is to value, empower, and celebrate the people at the heart of this industry."

The province says the hospitality sector employs more than 426,700 in accommodation and food services alone. This represents more than 5 percent of Ontario's workforce.
